Another Dog Buried Alive in a Pit !
Geoff and John could not believe their eyes when they discovered this dog buried in the soil in a Pit! It started to move and lifted up its head, Geoff held the rope helping John climb down into the very deep pit to bring up what ever was alive. It is disgusting who ever did this, only 50 meters from the dog shelter and all that was necessary to hand the dog in as a rescue, it was a very pathetic starved hunting dog, no excuses for it. Minutes later arriving at the Paphiakos clinic the staff were shocked, head nurse Julia, suggested she still could feed her with 3 large tins of dog food, a bowl of water, most probably the only decent meal she would have had in her life. It was then decided to perform the duty a ” Mercy killing”. At least she does not need to suffer any longer. There is worse than death, the suffering from humans and animals alike. The dog wagged her tail as she was going, as if to say, Thank you.

BEATEN,BASHED & BURIED ALIVE. EARTHA'S STORY
The measure of just how human we are has to be judged in the way we treat the weakest and most vulnerable creatures in our society. Sadly dogs seem to bear the brunt of mans anger, ignorance, and frustration, with many ending up dead or dying by the roadside after their owners lose all interest in them. George Zenonos is one man who experienced first hand the shameful treatment that can be meted out to 'man's best friend'. While driving through a deserted mountain area George saw ahead of him, what he first thought was a pile of earth and the surface area was moving, he stopped only to discover that a dogs paw had been desperately trying to clear away the earth, he had discovered a female hunting dog who with her last ounce of energy had been trying in vain to escape the confines of her shallow grave.
She had been bashed over the head then buried alive, George gathered the starved, scared, and helpless creature into his jeep and made what he described as a mercy dash to the Paphiakos Animal welfare clinic.
Here the vet was able to stabilise and treat her wounds, the staff then named her Eartha and over the past month since she came to the shelter she has recovered sufficiently to warrant being put on the re homing registry.
Now the question has to be, who out there possesses huge reserves of love, patience and basic human kindness, who has a safe environment for Eartha, who will walk, play and care for her. She is one year old and desperately needs a good a home where she can hopefully forget her horrific past experiences to go on and enjoy a long and happy life as a loyal companion.
EARTH HAS BEEN REHOMED !
Ellen & Ken Omeara rehomed Eartha after reading the article in our Whats Happening magazine. The story pulled at their heart strings and as they re-homed Jessie, a Boxer Cross from Paphiakos 18 months ago, decided to come and see if Eartha could be a friend to Jessie. In two days they have become best friends,
Eartha has a long way to know what the inside of a house is yet, as she keeps bumping into things like the patio doors, but is enjoying her runs with her new made family. A happy ending for Eartha who will be re-named Sophie, we have over 200 other dogs that have sad or un happy backgrounds that need re-homing, please come and visit us at our clinic for more information telephone 00357 26946461, and ask to speak to one of our re-homing officers.

Emergency! Paphiakos to the Rescue
Paphiakos once again went into action, when asked to pick up 50 dogs, which were living in the middle of nowhere, in a far from ideal situation. Two trucks, a car and five Paphiakos employees were ready for the challenge. It was a very successful morning as 17 of them were rescued and the rest will follow in due course. They had been well fed but the living conditions were appalling. All these dogs are looking for homes, please contact the clinic if you can help with re-homing or donations.

Mercy Killing
This Collie Dog was starving to death and one night staggered into a restaurant in Chlorakas. Our Special night time rescue team Neal & Anita were called out to rescue him. When weighed back at the Clinic he weighed less than 5 kilos and he was being eaten alive by ticks.Regretably, this dog had to be euthanized

Ignorance = Cruelty!
These poor dogs were recently brought into the Rescue Centre both with tick and parasite infestation!
How can anyone let an animal get into this condition?

The Cruelty of Snares!
This cat had been surviving for over a week with a wire snare embedded around his torso. A member of Paphiakos staff eventually was able to catch him and he received emergency treatment to remove the wire. After 5 days observation in the Clinic there appeared to be no internal injuries so he was returned back to his territory. Since this traumatic episode he has been seen regularly and appears to be doing well.
June 2011 Update:
This cat, now named 'Dusty' is now enjoying life with the member of Paphiakos staff who rescued him in April 2010. Although he endured this terrible ordeal over one year ago, his scars have only just healed.
